  • Application Requirement:
    • Japan-affiliate scientist or graduate student
    • Good working knowledge of the English language is required.
      * For non-Japan-affiliate scientists, if you meet the following conditions, you can apply through J-DESC.

Those who have Japanese nationality

  • Please fill in the scientist of Japanese institutions in the scientific reference.
  • It is expected that you will be able to obtain some kind of status (part-time work possible) at a Japanese institution before the start of expedition. Please indicate that in the letter of recommendation from the host scientist and submit it.
  • When you publish the results of the expedition, please indicate the Japanese institution as your affiliation.
  • J-DESC will support travel expenses related to boarding only if your main base of activity is in Japan, such as having a full-time status at a Japanese institution or living in Japan. Please indicate that in the letter of recommendation from the host scientist and submit it.

Those who have not Japanese nationality

  • Please fill in the scientist of Japanese institutions in the scientific reference.
  • It is necessary to have a status with a Japanese institution and have a main base of activity in Japan (live in Japan) before the start of the expedition. Please indicate that in the letter of recommendation from the host scientist and submit it. If the main activity base is not in Japan at the start of the expedition, you will be asked to decline boarding from the Japan’s berth allocation.
  • When you publish the results of the expedition, please indicate the Japanese institution as your affiliation.
  • Expertise sought: All specialties
     (downhole logging, geophysics, hydrogeology, inorganic geochemistry, microbiology, organic geochemistry, paleomagnetics, paleontology, palynology, physical properties, sedimentology, stratigraphic correlation, and structural geology. For the offshore phase of the expedition, we are particularly looking for the following fields: downhole logging, hydrogeology, inorganic geochemistry, microbiology, organic geochemistry, and sedimentology.)

    For non-Japan-affiliate but meet the required conditions scientists, please send the letter of recommendation from the host scientist at the Japanese institution.
    For graduate students, please send a letter of recommendation from your supervisor via the application form.
