Kick-off symposium 2025
International Symposium for Warm-period Climate Change Research Center with the International Ocean Drilling Program School [WarmCCR]
Event summary
To hold a kick-off symposium for the project “Warm-period Climate Change Research Center with the International Ocean Drilling Program School,” which has been selected for the JSPS Core-to-Core Program (JSPS Kochi C2C). To understand the reality of climate change during past warm periods (Quaternary, Miocene, Eocene, etc.), it is essential to adopt a paleoenvironmental approach through the analysis of deep-sea drilling cores and other relevant data. The value of using the repository cores recovered through the long-term scientific ocean drilling programs and stored in the repository is also high. In addition, the International Ocean Drilling Programme (IODP3) began in 2025, and the Kochi Core Center (KCC) will continue to operate as an international hub for core repositories and core analysis. In IODP3, in parallel with the promotion of advanced research through new drilling and coring expeditions, the SPARC program —a new initiative for reusing repository cores (legacy cores) —will be launched. The Japanese community and KCC have already developed the Repository Core Re-Discovery Program (ReCoRD) and are working on five ReCoRD projects. In addition to exchanging information on research into climate change during the past warm period, it is necessary to exchange information on maximizing the value of these repository cores, measures for reusing them, strengthening the core repository function, and developing young researchers through training schools. For this reason, we will hold an international symposium to promote international exchange in scientific drilling.
