航海の目的
北極海は、温暖な白亜紀から寒冷な新生代への移行過程や、数百～数千年規模の急激かつ突然な気候変動など、過去の環境変動に対して重要な役割を果た してきたと考えられている。また、現在でも北極海の海氷は北半球のアルベド（太陽から降り注いだ光を地球がどれだけ反射するかの割合）と淡水の分布に大き な影響を与えているとともに、北極海が全世界の海洋を循環する高密度の冷たい深層水の形成に関与しているとも指摘されている。これらの実態は謎に包まれて いたが、北極海において深海掘削を行い、採取された資料を研究することによって解明することができると考えられている。
今回の航海では、北極海のほぼ中央部に位置するロモノソフ海嶺の４地点において、水深約1,000mの海底下をそれぞれ約500ｍ 掘削することとしており、過去5000万年間（新生代のほとんど）の北極海の海洋変動を記録した堆積物を、世界で初めて採取する計画である。これにより、 1) 北極の海氷の形成はいつはじまったのか、2) 北半球の氷河化に北極海はどのように関与してきたのか、3) 北極海の海洋構造はどのように形成・進化してきたのか、4) 北極海における海洋プランクトンはどのように変化してきたのか、5) 北極海は急激かつ突然の気候変化にどのように関与してきたのか、6) ベーリング海峡はいつ形成されたのか、などの科学的諸課題に、岩石物性学、堆積学、地球化学、微古生物学など、様々な分野から総合的に取り組み、気候変動 における北極海の役割を解明する。
